Nairobi National Park

Established in 1946, Nairobi national park is the oldest national park in Kenya. It is located 7km south of Nairobi and this makes it the easiest nature reserve to access from the capital. The park includes a rhino sanctuary protecting more than 50 rhinos. Other wildlife in the park includes cheetahs, gazelles, buffaloes, warthogs, lions and elands among others. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in Nairobo national park.


Things to do in Nairobi national park
1- Game drives: you can explore the park in a safari vehicle to all accessible locations and view most of the wildlife. However, lions and leopards are not commonly seen but can sighted mostly early morning before they retire to their hideouts.


2- Bird watching: the park is a good spot for bird watching. It has over 400 bird species in habitats including the savannah plains and wetlands. Some of the bird species in the park include the African fish eagle, Ruppells vulture, secretary bird, martial eagle, kori bustard and crested cranes among others.


3- Walking tours: Nairobi national park has a number of trails for nature walks. This activity takes you closer to the wildlife as you explore the park on foot. Tourists on nature walks are accompanied by game rangers.


4- Turtle & tortoise watching: you have a chance to watch tortoises and turtles from the closest proximity or even touch them or handle them in your hands.


5- Visit David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: well-placed at the park entrance, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust should be a must visit. This is an orphan elephant rescue and the rehabilitation program was established by Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her late husband David Sheldrick.


6- Visit the giraffe center: The Giraffe center is located near Nairobi national park and is one of the places worth adding to your bucket list when planning for a tour to the park.
