Meru

Meru is a town located in the eastern part of Kenya and it hosts the headquarters of Meru County. it is the seventh largest town in Kenya with a municipal council that comprises a population of about 240,900 residents.
Meru is predominantly occupied by a Bantu ethnic group known as the Ameru. It is an agricultural and commercial town that also features tourism and travel with a number of places to visit and interesting things to do.

Attractions in and near Meru
Samburu national reserve: this game reserve is situated on the banks of Ewaso Ng’iro river in Kenya. The 165sq.km park is home to the Grevy’s zebra, the long-necked antelope “Gerenuk”, the rare Beisa Oryx, African elephants and the Blue-shanked Somali ostriches. The national reserve is also one of the two areas where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness that was made popular in the best-selling book and award-winning movie Born Free.
Buffalo springs national reserve: the reserve is located in the south of Samburu national park. It was established in 1948 as part of the game reserve, and new boundaries were demarcated in 1985. Buffalo springs reserve covers an area of 131sq.km and protects varied wildlife including the endangered Grevy’s Zebra, oryx, gerenuk, the African bush elephant, reticulated giraffe, African buffalo, Grant’s zebra, lion, spotted hyena, African leopard and cheetah.
Meru museum: this museum conserves the cultural history and heritage of the Ameru people. It is located in Meru town.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy: located in northern Kenya, the conservancy was established in 1995. It covers an area of 250 sq.km where it protects various wildlife including the endangered black rhinos, Cape buffaloes, leopards, African elephants, Grevy’s zebras, sitatungas and lions.
Meru national park: overing an area of about 870 sq.km, Mt. Meru National Park is one of the best places to visit for wildlife viewing in Meru. It is home to the African bush elephant, Grévy’s zebra, hippos, eastern black rhinoceros, southern white rhinoceros, lion, leopard and cheetah among others.
Mount Kenya: Mt. Kenya’s Meru side has interesting attractions like the Semwe Salt lick, Vivvien Falls, Ithanguni, Lake Alice, Lake Ellis and the Sacred Lake. You an also go bird watching on the slopes of the mountain and mountain climbing to your convenient altitude on the mountain.
How to get to Meru
Meru town is connected to Nairobi by a tarmac road. The closest international airport to Meru is located 35 kilometers away, that is in Isiolo.
