Eldoret

Eldoret is a major town located on the Uasin Gishu Plateau in the western part of Kenya. It is one of the fastest-growing towns in the country with 475,716 people according to the 2019 National census. The town got its name from a Maasai word “Eldore” which translates as “Stony river”. This was a reference to the floor of Sosiani River which runs through the town.

Eldoret is the capital of Uasin Gishu County and is governed by the county government. It has numerous estates and some of them include Kapseret, Huruma, Elgon View, Shauri, Kipkorgot, Kimumu, Jerusalem, Langas, Kapsoya, Kahoya, Kipkaren, Annex and West Indies among others.


Things to do & see in Eldoret
The Hindu Temple
: this is one of the largest temples in the city. It is a place of worship for the Hindu people. The temple has a beautiful and attractive architecture, a good place to consider visiting when in Eldoret.


The Tea Estate at the Nandi Hills: hiking up to the top of Nandi hills is a great adventure that offers breathtaking views of the tea estates on the gentle slopes. You can also visit the tea factories and see how the tea is manufactured as well as grab yourself some tea for your home use.


Hike the Cherangani Hills: for a better exploration and view of Eldoret town, hike the Cherangani hills. The short hikes also allow you to learn more about the wildlife around the hill.
Visit The Open Air Fruits And Vegetable Market: the market is normally filled with lots of locally grown fruits and vegetables which are sold at favorable prices. It is an ideal market for a tour and you can also buy and taste these yummy fruits.


Visit the High-altitude Training Centre: you have heard and know of many of the world top athletes and most of them come from Kenya. It is also important to know that many of them come from Eldoret because of the training they go through at the high-altitude training center. The fitness center has world class facilities and a conducive environment to train for competitions regarding Olympics and others. You can visit the training centre for a tour.

How to get to Eldoret
Eldoret can be accessed by air, road or railway transport. By road, you can move around the city, out of it or get there on self drive or with a driver who is familiar with the place. The road distance from Nairobi to Eldoret is 193 miles and takes about 4 hours. The Trans-African highway goes through Eldoret city.
